How do I put a calendar on my screen?

I've put a lot of appointments in the iOS calendar but on the lock screen, none of them appear or remind me with a little buzz or something.  I know that I can swipe down on the home screen and get the weather, calendar, and stocks but is there a way...

I had put my laptop down in front of me, at a distance, with the screen propped back some when I noticed that my background image looked really, really weird. In the image on my screen, white people looked black, my orange calendar gadget look green...

I put in an appointment at 6 pm, and it shows up on the bottom of the screen as 7pm. Why? Also, where is the full calendar option? Or is the calendar banner at the bottom the only option?
