Why don't Lexmark inkjet printers work with remanufactured Lexmark cartridges?

I purchased a remanufactured Lexmark cartridge and my Lexmark will not recognize it. I see everyone else has the same problem. Why do we recycle them, thinking we are doing well, when the company blocks them from working on their printers?
