How does the body use energy?

I understand that the body uses chemical reactions to fuel movement, and the energy is released, thus heating up the body. What I don't understand is how a chemical can turn into energy, and how the energy is prepared for use by the body. Basically, I don't understand the in-between when you have energy and then all the sudden you make your arm move. Also, if the by-product of using energy is heat, then why can't the body just re-absorb the heat back into stored energy?
