How is it decided whether a road will be called a road, street, avenue or drive?

The names of the roads in UK usually end up in Road, Street, Avenue, Close, Garden, Way. Is there some sort of rule of thumb that determines what they stand for. E.g. for the road names that end in 'Close' means there is no way out of the road other...

I drive around my town and look at the different Road names and at the end you see all of those. What are the differences between them because every road to me looks basically the same so why would they have different endings?

I know there has to be SOME sort of difference between all of these. I know a Circle is one that doesn't connect to any other road, and just dead-ends into a big circular dead-end. But what about all the rest? I have asked ALL my friends and NO ONE knows...
