How safe is Staten Island NY?

I'm trying to go visit a college and the cheapest bus fair goes to albany. Just wondering how far apart they are..or how far Is Yonkers NY is from Staten Island

I'm trying to visit one of my friends who moved out there. I'm willing to take a train or a bus but I don't know how to get to Staten Island really. I know it's in New York City and not that far from Manhattan.... So how do I get there from here?
