How to change a dvd format?

I have video thats in MP4 format but it wont play in my Dvd player. I want to put the info on a dvd using NERO burning ROM 10. This is a confusing program, can someone walk me through it? Windows dvd burner cant handle MP4s.

I downloaded a movie and it only was available in avi or mpg format. I downloaded the mpg but now i cant get it to burn onto a dvd. PLEASE help !!! Its driving me nuts and I am NOT that good with the computer so I DESPERATLY need help. Thanks in advance...
