What is blood clots? what can cause blood clots?

My mother has been on Paxil for over 20 years. Lately, she has been getting blood clots. This is her second one, which is in the deep veins. She has smoked and drank on Paxil. It says blood clots can be a side effect. So can it cause it?

Could blood clots cause a heart attack? If so, how? My dad tends to eat food that is somewhat higher in fat and cholesteral, and doensn't exercise much (sits a lot), so I'm just wondering all this since he had a blood clot in his leg not too long ago...
