What type of wood should I use for my subwoofer box?

I am going to be building a new box for my sub, what is the best wood to use? MDF?

I've seen a lot of posts where people specifically suggest MDF, but my buddy used solid wood and keeps telling me I should use that. Does anyone know what professional audio stores use? Will I see a clear benefit from one over the other? Thanks very...

Why do they use MDF instead of real solid wood in small sub boxes?

I would also like to know how many cubic feet of space my box needs to be to get awesome performance out of my sub.

Please explain answers in detail, so if a certain type of wood won't work, tell me why and how MUCH it wouldn't work. and if using a type of wood that isn't intended for subwoofer boxes would be better than just having the subwoofer in the wrong kind...
