I want/need to learn sign language. How can I start and methods on where to start?

Ok so I have a slight dilemma. My mentor for a program that I am in is def and I need to interact with him. I'm definitely open to learning ASL and I'm willing to put the time and effort, my one problem is that I need to learn ASAP and I have no idea where to start. I know a couple of sentences and words and I studied the whole alphabet, but I kind of want to start having conversations with him and I was wondering if there was a program online for free that teaches me like sentences or paragraphs...
