Which schools should I apply to in the US and how do I calculate my GPA?

I did 2 years at a community college and got a 3.6 gpa there. Then I transferred to a university and got a 2.9 gpa there for the last two years. Will they average out the two gpas?

Do they use semester grades or quarter grades? Im a freshman and just ended my year. If its quarter grades then i have a 3.6 and if its semester i have a 3.42. Its out of 4, isthat good?
