How can I convert MPEG2 to HD-DVD?

i have a DVD conversion of old super8 seems to be mpeg2 does it make sense to convert it to .avi 1080HD or is mpeg4 good enough ?? or 769HD .avi ?

Im on a MAC computer and i have a wmv. file I want to convert so i can upload to youtube. I have Handbrake and Any Video Converter but everytime i try to convert it, the application closes. any other suggestions?
