How can I permanently set my screen resolution?

I have hooked a Dell tower up to a Compaq MV540 screen, an old screen. When the computer boots up, the resolution is set way too low, so I go to the Control panel, to adjust. I hit "apply" when I set to a higher setting, and the screen blinks...

i log out sometimes my resolution changes to everything is really big. i always have to save the settings each time. is there a way where i can keep my screen how i have it now and not ever change?btw im using xp
