How can you get a patent?

I have a really cool idea that I want to get going and make it real but I want to get a patent first so people can't take my idea. How do I get the patent and how much will it cost?

Can I get a patent on my idea? Or I'll have to build up a prototype model? How much does it costs overall?

I have recently created a great invention and I need to know how to get a patent.

I would like to get a company to take a look at the bumper sticker and tell me if they would mass produce it for me and sign a contract to pay royalties to me as long as it sells well. Any ideas?? How do I go about this??
