How do I hook a computer up to a 5.1 surround sound receiver so that all speakers are recognized?

I recently hooked up my computer to my Sony 5.1 surround sound receiver. The sound card I have is an Audigy 4 and I connect the two using an optical cable. The speakers on my receiver will broadcast the sound from my computer in all channels, however when I run diagnostics, only the front right and left are recognized correctly by the computer (it sends test sounds through the speakers labeling them, so the front left will say "Front Left" and the right will do likewise but no sound comes...
