How much would it cost to fix a blown head gasket on a 2001 BMW 325ci?

I'm wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate on cost of this issue. I've head it's a big job, and I only have basic maintenance experience. It happened last week and the car's currently nonoperational so I'm taking it in, but don't want to get robbed by a dealer or shop. what would the dealer cost be? what would independent shops charge?
