I am on a tourist visa in Canada. Is it possible to cross the US border?

Hi all I'm american and am thinking about applying for a temporary work visa to canada for the summer (i already have a potential job). what worries me is that if i were denied my visa (for whatever reason) i wouldn't be allowed to cross the border....

If I am on tourist visa which limits each stay to 6 months and I want to keep staying for taking private music lessons, can I cross the border to canada and return in a few days? Will this cause suspicion?
