Is there anyway you can practice snowboarding without a mountain?

I'm really excited for the Bearfire Resort down by DFW to open up next fall, but a lot of people say that snowboarding on their mountain would be fake..which in reality it is, but really, I'm a kid from the south who NEVER gets to practice snowboarding...

I totally get freaked out about pointing the nose of the snowboard down the mountain. I end up just side steping my whole way down the mountain. How do I get over this fear? And isnt it all about edges while you are going down the mountain?
