Should I turn off my computer during a thunderstorm?

I've always heard it's best to turn your computer off during a thunderstorm cause it will short it out. Is this true?

i dont want the moniter to blast or something....can i keep it on, cuz the storms REALLY dangerous looking???

Forgive me, but I've seen people become concerned when it starts to storm and do this. I've never known why...
