What does "X" stand for in "LAX?

i noticed that tons of airports have names like LAX and SFO what does the X stand for in the Los Angeles airport?

IS LOS ANGELES (x) wat?????

What does LAX mean, I think its like Los Angeles..something, whats the X stand for? and shouldnt it be LAIA instead of LAX,because LAIA would be 'Los Angeles International Airport'?
