What format does a DVD player with a USB port play?

ive downloaded a few movies from Utorrent and none of them work on my DVD player, my dvd player has a usb port so i put the movie on my hardrive and plugged it into the dvd player, i click on the movie i want to watch but it doesn't play..what format...

I'm looking for a dvd player to buy for my dad to go in his bedroom, it needs to have a USB port so he can watch movies and tv shows that he's downloaded on to his hard ...show more

like the title says I have a samsung dvd player, I don't know what the model is but it has usb host play. I tried wmv and mpg4, neither worked so I wanted to now what format it needs to be!

i have tried using .avi but it did't worked.DVD player detects USb & even shows its files but it does not plays it.
