What is a good software to edit video?

I dont want to do anything fancy just yet. I just want to be able to put the good bits together. What programme will allow me to do this and how do i transfer the film into my pc to use? Never done this before.

I need software other than Windows Movie Maker that will edit my flip video camera videos. I really want FREE software. I would really love a lot of affects, but even just a few would do. Thank you!

The build-in editing can trim (i.e. cut off a section at the beginning and a section at the end), but doesn't seem able to delete a section in the middle. What's the best/cheapest video-editing software that can do this?
