What video format do portable DVD players play?

i've made a video on videopad video editor but don't know which format to pick for downloading to dvd disc that will play on a dvd player

I've heard that those Divx certified players can play DVD's without having to convert AVI files to DVD files (.vob). So if i burn my video files (AVI files) into a DVD data disc, can it be played?

I have mine set to all region. The video system although is NTSC.
