Is getting a blu-ray player for my PC to watch movies on a cheaper and viable alternative to buying an HDTV?

I can't afford £500 for a big hdtv, and another £250 for a blu-ray player (or PS3), but I've seen that blu-ray players for PCs start at £70, and I think I can get a decent TFT monitor for under £100 (at the moment I've got a CRT). Does this makes sense? Any drawbacks here?
